Which Online Casino Games Suit Beginners? A Comparison by Rules and Pace
For a first-time player, baccarat and roulette are the easiest table games to learn: baccarat asks one decision per round (Player, Banker or Tie) and roulette asks only where to place chips, and both publish their return in the rules, 98.94% for baccarat and 97.30% for standard roulette. Blackjack returns more, up to 99.29% with perfect play under Loto-Québec’s standard rules, but only if you make the right decision on every hand. Slots need no decisions at all, but their return varies by game and by casino, from under 90% to almost 97% in the lobbies we checked. We base this on published rules documents and lobby pages read on October 19 and 20, 2026.

How do the games compare side by side?
| Game | What you decide each round | Published return | Lowest live minimum we saw |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baccarat | One bet: Player, Banker or Tie | 98.94% | C$1 (Speed Baccarat A, Loto-Québec) |
| Roulette | Where to place chips | 97.30% (98.65% on even-money bets with La Partage) | 10¢ (Casino de Montréal Roulette 14, Loto-Québec) |
| Blackjack | Hit, stand, double, split on every hand | Up to 99.29% with optimal play | C$1 (Infinite Blackjack, Loto-Québec) |
| Craps | Which bets to make on the come-out roll and the point | 99.17% on Don’t Pass and Don’t Come with equal odds | 50¢ (Craps, Loto-Québec) |
| Slots | Stake only | Varies by game and casino | Varies by game |
The returns come from each game’s rules document, which states the long-run percentage of stakes paid back. A higher return means a lower average cost per bet, not a better chance of winning a particular round.
Converted into money, the differences are small per bet and large over a session. For every C$10 staked, the published returns mean an average cost of about 27 cents at standard roulette, 13.5 cents on even-money bets with La Partage, 10.6 cents at baccarat, 8.3 cents on Don’t Pass with equal odds at craps, and 7.1 cents at blackjack played perfectly. Multiply by the number of bets you make in an evening to see what a game really costs.
Why baccarat is the simplest table game
In baccarat you bet on Player, Banker or Tie before the cards are dealt, and the dealer follows fixed drawing rules after that. Loto-Québec’s Speed Baccarat rules pay Player bets 1:1, Banker bets 0.95:1 (a 5% commission) and Tie bets 8:1, with eight decks and an RTP of 98.94%. You make no decisions during the hand, so you cannot play it “wrong”. The only choice that changes your cost is which of the three bets you make.
Why roulette is easy to follow
Roulette has more bet types, but each one is a plain bet on where the ball lands. Loto-Québec’s rules list the payouts: a single number pays 35:1, a split 17:1, a street 11:1, a corner 8:1 and a line 5:1; a column or dozen pays 2:1; red or black, even or odd, and 1 to 18 or 19 to 36 pay 1:1. Zero is not covered by the outside bets. On a single-zero wheel the return is 97.30%. At a table with La Partage, such as Live French Roulette, half of an even-money bet is returned when zero comes up, and those bets return 98.65%.
Why blackjack rewards learning first
Blackjack’s published return is the highest in the table, but it assumes optimal play. Loto-Québec’s standard rules use eight decks, the dealer stands on soft 17, blackjack pays 3:2 and insurance 2:1; you can double on any two first cards, split once and cannot double after a split. With those rules the optimal theoretical payout is 99.29%. Every decision you make differently from the optimal one lowers that figure, so blackjack suits a beginner who is ready to learn a decision chart first.
Why craps takes longer to learn
Craps has two phases. On the come-out roll, 7 or 11 wins the Pass Line, while 2 or 3 wins Don’t Pass and 12 pushes it. Any other number becomes the point, and the round continues until the point or a 7 is rolled. Loto-Québec’s live craps has an Easy Mode with fewer bets, which helps a first session. Its best published return, 99.17%, is on Don’t Pass and Don’t Come with equal odds.
How does pace differ online?
At live tables, the dealer runs the round. Loto-Québec and PlayNow rules describe a light that turns green when you can bet, yellow when time is nearly up and red when betting has closed; after that the dealer produces the result. In Loto-Québec’s Speed Blackjack, the fastest decision gets the next card first, so rounds move quicker. For a beginner, a standard table gives more time to read the board.
Slots are paced by the regulator in Ontario. The AGCO’s standards ban autoplay, ban playing several slots at once, require at least 2.5 seconds between game starts and rule out turbo or quick-spin features. Ontario slots must also show your session net position in Canadian dollars and must not celebrate a return equal to or below your stake as a win. Those rules make it easier to see what a session is costing you.
Why slots are simple but harder to compare
A slot asks only for a stake, which makes it easy to start. The difficulty is the return. Of 289 OLG.ca slot pages we collected, every page showed an RTP, and the figures ranged from 86.0% to 90.5% on one game up to 96.73% to 96.95% on another. The same game can also run at different settings on different sites: Betty’s Ontario pages showed 10 of 11 Pragmatic Play titles about 1 to 2 points below the provider’s own figure. Before you pick a slot, read its RTP in the game info.
What we could not confirm
- Rounds per hour at each game: casinos do not publish them.
- Live table limits at most Ontario operators: they appear after login.
Try it before you stake more
Pick one game, read its rules document or help panel, and play the table minimum for a set number of rounds while you learn. Set a deposit or time limit before you start; every regulated Ontario operator must offer them. Our guide to trying an online casino for the first time covers account setup, and Quebec’s lotoquebec.com live tables are one place where limits and rules are public without login.
