Trying an Online Casino for the First Time: Account Setup and Choosing Your First Game

Last checked: 4 min read By Casino Choice Canada Editorial Team

A smartphone, a roulette wheel and a small limit slider

To play at an online casino for the first time, do five things in order: choose a site from your province’s official list, open an account and complete the identity check, set a deposit and time limit, make a small first deposit with a method you can also withdraw to, and start with one game whose rules you have read. In Ontario you must be 19 or older and physically in the province; in Alberta, 18 and physically in Alberta. Regulated operators in both provinces must offer limit tools, and Ontario’s standards require that bonus conditions be shown up front. Each step below uses the operators’ and regulators’ own pages, read on October 19 and 20, 2026.

Step 1: Which site should you open an account with?

Start from the list your province publishes, not from an ad. iGaming Ontario’s directory listed 84 regulated sites from 49 operators as of September 1, 2026, and every site of a registered Ontario operator displays the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos. In Alberta, the Alberta iGaming Corporation’s list of registered sites had 51 entries when we read it, and those sites show the AiGC logo and the RG Check seal. Quebec and British Columbia run provincial sites. Our province-first comparison sets out the options province by province.

Step 2: How does account setup and verification work?

Expect to give your name, date of birth, address and contact details, and to prove them. Operators differ on when the check happens:

  • Before your first deposit or game. PlayOJO (Ontario) runs FINTRAC-standard verification at that point and aims to verify uploaded documents within 12 hours.
  • Before your first bet. Betty (Ontario) lets you bet only after identity verification and a deposit, and the name on your account must match the name on your payment account.
  • Instantly or with a short review. Jackpot City (Ontario) asks for government photo ID and proof of address no older than 6 months, and says live verification through Jumio is usually instant, with manual review taking a few hours.

Doing the check at sign-up saves time later, because withdrawals in Ontario are paid only after the operator confirms the account holder made the request.

Step 3: Which limits should you set first?

Set them before you deposit. iGaming Ontario says Ontario operators must provide, at a minimum, spend-limit and time-limit tools, a short-term break and longer-term self-exclusion. Betty’s terms, as one example, offer deposit, loss and play-time limits for 24 hours, 7 days or 1 month, and loosening a limit only takes effect after a 24-hour cool-off. Loosening is deliberately slow. Pick a deposit limit you would be comfortable losing in full, and a session time you will actually stop at. Help lines for each province are on our responsible gambling page.

Step 4: How should you make the first deposit?

Choose a method that the casino also pays withdrawals to, so your first cash-out does not need a new method. Some examples of minimums:

  • bet365 (Ontario): Interac from C$10, with no bet365 fee on Interac deposits.
  • PlayOJO (Ontario): C$10 minimum for each listed method.
  • PlayNow.com (British Columbia): C$5 minimum; withdrawals go by bank transfer.

iGaming Ontario reminds players that each bank has its own rules and fees for gaming transactions, so check with yours. Keep the first deposit small: the aim of a first session is to learn how the site works.

Step 5: What should you check in a welcome bonus?

Read the conditions before you accept. Ontario’s standards require operators to show material conditions up front, and an offer cannot be called “free” or “risk-free” if you have to risk your own money. The key number is the wagering requirement. iGaming Ontario’s own example: a C$10 bonus with a 10x requirement means wagering C$100 before winnings from the bonus can be withdrawn. Check also which games count toward it; some operators count table games at only a small share of the stake.

Step 6: Which game should you play first?

Pick one game and learn its rules before the first bet. Baccarat asks a single decision per round (Player, Banker or Tie) and Loto-Québec’s rules give it a 98.94% return; roulette asks only where to place chips. If you choose slots, note that Ontario’s rules ban autoplay and require at least 2.5 seconds between spins, and that the screen must show your net position for the session in Canadian dollars. Our beginner’s comparison of casino games sets the options side by side.

Step 7: How do you cash out the first time?

Open the withdrawal page before you need it. Note the stated processing time, the minimum and whether there is a pending or reversal period. A first withdrawal can take longer than later ones, because some operators run extra checks the first time you use a method; Luxury Casino and Yukon Gold in Ontario, for example, say these can add 5 to 7 working days. If something stalls, iGaming Ontario says to work with the operator first and get a complaint number; it can take escalated disputes only about regulated sites.

What we could not confirm

  • How long verification takes at most operators: few publish a time.
  • Bonus terms at each operator: promotions change, so we did not record them for this guide.

A first-session checklist

Before you log off, check four things: your limits are set, your identity is verified, your deposit and withdrawal method match, and you know where the “take a break” button is. If all four are done, the account is ready for whenever you want to come back. Our guide to comparing casino usability and support shows what else to test before a second deposit.
