Canadian Real-Money Casino Apps: How to Separate Casino Play from Rewards Apps
Casino apps that pay real money in Canada come from operators that are licensed where you play, and the app stores enforce that: Apple requires real-money gaming apps to have the necessary licensing where they are used, to be geo-restricted to those places and to be free to download, and Google Play allows real-money gambling apps only from licensed or government operators, rated Adults Only. Social casino apps are different products. They sell virtual credit through the store’s own payment system, which real-money apps are not allowed to do, and Google classes them as simulated gambling. The quickest test is how the app takes your money. We read both stores’ policies on October 19, 2026.
How do the app stores separate real-money casinos from social casinos?
Apple. Section 5.3.4 of Apple’s App Review Guidelines says real-money gaming apps must have the necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where they are used, must be geo-restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store. Section 5.3.3 bars in-app purchase of credit or currency for real-money gaming.
Google Play. Google’s Real-Money Gambling policy allows gambling apps only in selected countries and only after an application. The operator must be licensed or a government operator; the app must restrict players by age and location, be free to download without Google Play billing, be rated Adults Only and show responsible gambling information. Google treats social casino and virtual slot apps as simulated gambling, and gives as an example of a violation a simulated casino game that directs users to real-money casinos.
Put together: a real-money casino app is free to download and takes deposits through the casino’s own cashier. An app that sells credit through the store’s payment system cannot be a real-money gambling app under Apple’s section 5.3.3.

Five signals that tell them apart
- How you pay. If the app sells coins, chips or credit through an App Store or Google Play purchase, it is not a real-money gambling app. Real-money apps take deposits in their own cashier, by card, bank transfer or Interac.
- Location checks. A real-money app has to confirm where you are and block play outside the licensed area. In Ontario, the AGCO’s standards require operators to detect and keep monitoring a player’s location and to block play from unverified locations.
- Age rating and identity. Google requires real-money apps to be rated Adults Only. Regulated operators also verify your identity before you can withdraw.
- Provincial logos. iGaming Ontario says every site offered by a registered Ontario operator displays the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos. In Alberta, the Alberta iGaming Corporation says a regulated site shows its logo and the Responsible Gambling Council RG Check seal.
- Cash-out. A real-money app has a withdrawal page with methods and times. If there is no way to withdraw to your bank, you are playing for entertainment credit only.
Which real-money casino apps can you use in Canada?
That depends on your province, because an app is only as available as the licence behind it.
- Ontario: apps from the operators in iGaming Ontario’s directory, which listed 84 sites from 49 operators as of September 1, 2026, plus OLG.ca. You must be 19 or older and physically in Ontario to wager.
- Alberta: apps from sites on the Alberta iGaming Corporation’s list of registered sites, plus Play Alberta. You must be 18 or older and physically in Alberta.
- Quebec and British Columbia: the provincial operators, Loto-Québec and BCLC’s PlayNow.
We did not catalogue which of these operators publish a separate app and which offer play through a mobile browser only. The same account rules apply either way.
What do social casino apps offer instead?
Social casino apps let you play slot and table games for virtual coins. Google’s policy describes them as simulated gambling. Winnings stay inside the app; there is no cash-out to a bank account. They can show how a game plays without real stakes, but they are not a path to real-money play. If a social app pushes you toward a real-money casino, Google’s policy treats that as a violation.
Why does the difference matter once you deposit?
Because the provincial protections come with the licence, not with the app. iGaming Ontario says Ontario operators must offer at least spend and time limits, a short-term break and longer-term self-exclusion, and must take part in BetGuard, Ontario’s central self-exclusion registry. In Alberta, if an approved operator’s support cannot solve a problem within 72 hours, you can file a dispute with the Alberta iGaming Corporation. A social app’s coins are outside all of this, and so is any app that is not on your province’s list.
What about apps that promise rewards?
Treat any app that offers prizes for playing casino-style games with the same five signals. If it sells credit through the store and has no regulated cashier or withdrawal page, it is not a real-money casino, whatever it calls its prizes. If it does take deposits and pay out, it needs a licence where you are, and the provincial lists above are where to check.
What we could not confirm
- Which countries Google Play currently allows for real-money gambling apps: its policy page does not list them.
- Which regulated Canadian operators publish separate apps.
Check an app before you install it
On the store listing, read the developer name and compare it with the operator named in your province’s list. Check the age rating and the price: a real-money app is free. After installing, look for a location prompt, the provincial logos and a withdrawal page in the cashier. Our guides to choosing between an app and a mobile browser and checking a casino app’s publisher and permissions go further.
