Are Mobile Casino Apps Safe? Publisher, Permissions and Account Checks

Last checked: 4 min read By Casino Choice Canada Editorial Team

A smartphone, a padlock and a casino chip

A mobile casino app is as reliable as the company that publishes it, and you can check that company in three steps: match the publisher name in the store to an operator on your province’s official list, allow only the permissions the app needs to meet provincial rules (location above all), and set up your account so that money can only move to an account in your own name. The app stores add a layer: Apple and Google both require real-money gambling apps to come from licensed operators, be restricted by location and be free to download. We base this on the store policies, the AGCO’s standards and operators’ own verification pages, read on October 19 and 20, 2026.

Who published the app?

The store listing names a developer or publisher. That name is often the company, not the brand you know. iGaming Ontario’s own operator list shows how far apart the two can be: it names companies such as BetMGM Canada Inc., FanDuel Canada ULC, Rush Street Interactive Canada, ULC (BetRivers), Skill On Net Ltd. (PlayOJO), Cadtree Limited (Jackpot City and Spin Casino), The Six Gaming Limited (Amazon Slots), Golden Nebula Limited (Casino Days), VHL Ontario Limited (888casino), Betty Gaming CA, Ltd and TigerGen Limited (LeoVegas).

So the check is: open the brand’s website footer or terms, note the operating company, and make sure the app’s publisher matches it. If the brand is on iGaming Ontario’s directory or the Alberta iGaming Corporation’s list, that company is the one the province has a relationship with.

What do the app stores require of real-money casino apps?

Apple. Section 5.3.4 of the App Review Guidelines requires real-money gaming apps to have the necessary licensing and permissions where they are used, to be geo-restricted to those places and to be free on the App Store. Section 5.3.3 bars in-app purchases of credit for real-money gaming.

Google Play. Real-money gambling apps are allowed only in selected countries after an application. The operator must be licensed or a government operator, the app must restrict players by age and location, be free to download without Google Play billing, carry an Adults Only rating and show responsible gambling information.

These rules mean a real-money app that asks you to buy casino credit through the store, or charges for the download, is outside the store’s own policy.

Which permissions should a casino app ask for?

The one you should expect is location. The AGCO’s Registrar’s Standards require Ontario operators to detect and keep monitoring where a player is, to block attempts to play from unverified locations and to detect software that tries to get around location detection. An app that never asks where you are cannot meet that rule for real-money play in Ontario.

Beyond location, ask why the app needs each permission it requests. Grant access only when the reason is tied to playing or verifying your account, and review the permissions again in your phone’s settings after the first session.

How do you protect the account itself?

The account checks happen on the operator’s side, but you control what you give them and where money goes.

  • Identity documents. Expect to provide government photo ID and proof of address. Jackpot City (Ontario) asks for proof of address no older than 6 months and says its live verification through Jumio is usually instant. 888casino (Ontario) requires photo ID for the first withdrawal and does not accept a Social Insurance Number or a health card as ID.
  • Withdrawals in your name. The AGCO’s standards allow withdrawals only after checking that the account holder made the request, and only to an account the player legally holds. Several operators state the same in their terms, for example that the name on the casino account must match the payment account.
  • Limits. Ontario operators must offer at least spend and time limits, a short break and longer self-exclusion. Set them in the account, not in the phone.
  • Security reviews. Betty (Ontario), for example, says it may run a security review of identity, age and transactions at any time and restrict access if documents are not provided, so keep your contact details current.

What if something goes wrong?

For a problem with a payment or a promotion, iGaming Ontario says to work with the operator first and get a complaint reference number. Complaints about suspected illegal activity, responsible gambling or advertising can go directly to the AGCO through iAGCO without contacting the operator. iGaming Ontario says it has no legal relationship with unregulated operators and can only help with disputes about regulated sites, which is one more reason to check the publisher before you install.

What we could not confirm

  • The exact publisher name each regulated operator uses in the App Store and Google Play: we did not catalogue store listings.
  • Which permissions each casino app requests.

Check an app before you install it

  1. Search for the brand in your province’s directory and note the company behind it.
  2. On the store listing, check the publisher name, the price (free) and, on Android, the Adults Only rating.
  3. After installing, allow location when asked; question any permission that has no clear link to playing or verifying your account.
  4. Before the first deposit, set a deposit limit and register a withdrawal method in your own name.
  5. Keep the operator’s support contact handy.
